Regardless of what culture you come from, what your favorite food is, you have to admit that Italian food is DAMN good.
Italian culture is a culture that revolves around food, around the dinner table. Food is something that is taken very seriously. Food is something that is an artform, food is something that they pour their whole heart and soul into.
When it comes down to it Italian food is fantastic across the board. However, these foods are some of the most classics of the Italian food and have the potential to be the best (if done right).
1. Classic Meatballs
There is something to be said about a perfect meatball.
The structural integrity of a meatball is difficult to achieve. You have to have the right amount of meat, breadcrumbs, and egg for it to all hold together. However, if you work that meat too hard your balls are gonna be tough so it’s crucial to figure out that perfect equilibrium without moving the meat around too much.
It’s one thing if it all holds together, however, if your meatball doesn’t have the right amount of seasoning what’s the point of the meatball?
Ask your mother how she seasons it, she’ll know the perfect amount of spices. Odds are that there is no recipe, it’s all about how it feels.
Now a good sauce is just as amazing as a good meatball. A good red sauce is the base, the heart of a meatball.
Again, just like a meatball the seasoning is easily the most important factor. However, it is very unlikely that you will have a recipe.
Lasagna is actual heaven. It is the perfect marriage of pasta, cheese, meat, and sauce. Biting into a well-done lasagna might be the next best thing to heaven.
When it comes to the debate over pizza, Chicago, and even New York are almost irrelevant when in comparison to Napoletana.
Pizza ought to be treated like a pastry. The most important thing is the bread, everything else is just a topping. When it comes to this kind of pizza the bread is certainly the star.
More often than not, tomato sauce (with nothing added) is used as the base. And it is topped with basil and mozzarella. That’s it. Nothing else. Just the basics.
And these basics – when well executed – come together to create the most perfect pizza experience that makes Chicago pale in comparison.
5. Eggplant Parm
Now, if the Italians can do something right it’s certainly meat. But the Italians have also mastered the original heavenly vegetarian dish.
Breaded eggplant smothered in that aforementioned perfect red sauce is a truly life changing experience.
Gelato is ice cream’s, richer, thicker, Italian cousin. Enough said.
This dessert is boozy and delicious. Lady fingers soaked in rum and coffee layered with mascarpone and topped with finely ground espresso: perfection.
If you want to experience Italian dessert in a pastry, I would highly recommend you plunge a spoon into Tiramisu.
